Machinga youth clubs gear up to increase demand of YFHS, SRHR in their communities

It is always an exciting time mingling with youth leaders and sharing ideas on how they can empower themselves and their communities to address the challenges and issues they face.

Such a time is currently underway in Liwonde, Machinga, where youth club leaders and patrons are undergoing training to become listening clubs of a sexual and reproductive health radio magazine program, Youth Alert! Mix.

In this learning and sharing experience, one notable thing is the passion these youth leaders have to ensure youth friendly health services (YFHS) are available and accessible to young people in their communities. As the sessions on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), communication, group dynamics and leadership are being delivered, one cannot miss the enthusiasm and amazing creative process that is being stirred up in these leaders and patrons.

Provided with an enabling environment, the participants reflect and share cases of their marginalization; how low, and in some cases, the lack of information and life planning skills bar them from attaining their personal and societal goals. In small groups they discuss and assess the needs in the communities, and develop action plans that not only will help them create a voice for youth issues, but will also improve the mindset of communities to increase meaningful involvement of young people in development activities at village level.

The leadership training has targeted forty clubs from  seven traditional authorities in the district.
